Cheonhakjeong Pavilion with old pine trees is placed on the steep, rocky coastal cliffs along the deep blue East Sea. This single-story pavilion with double layered eaves and octagonal roof was created by Choi Munsun and Kim Seongun in 1931. It is the best place along with Cheongganjeong Pavilion to appreciate the scenery of the East Sea. It is not that popular, so you can enjoy the sunrise very peacefully. Even though the best spot for watching the sunrise in Korea is Uisangdae Pavilion in Naksansa Temple, viewing the quiet sunrise of Cheonhakjeong Pavilion with a dense pine forest is also impressive. It is also the place to relax for local residents. They say that they forget their worries and concerns while watching the blue sea from Cheonhakjeong Pavilion.
Cheongganjeong Pavilion, built above a cliff with a small octagonal roof, is one of the eight view points of Gwandong where you can see the sunrise from Seoraksan Mountain. The scenery during sunrise and sunset offers a remarkable view of the waves coming in like clouds and going like fog. The builder and the date of accomplishment are unknown, but it is estimated that it was built before the 15th year of King Jungjong’s reign. After, King Hyeonjong visited in the 3rd year of his reign, and he wrote the sign wood himself with the name “Cheongganjeong”. At the present time, the signed wood plate is lost and it does not pass down.
It was involved in a fire in 1884, then it was restored in 1928, and more mending was executed by the orders of the first president, Lee Seungman. The new sign was written by Lee Seungman, and it hangs up until present times. One more adjustment was made to it in August of 1980. It was completely decomposed and put together again. There are surrounding wood of bamboo trees and dense cypress trees and the blue view of the East Sea blends together and it surely gives its nice title. There is a walking path developed around Cheongganjeong which you can use in only certain period of time during the day because of its military roles and purposes.
느낀 점 :
I arrived at Gyoam-ri, darkness had already settled over the beach and port. All I could hear was the sound of the wind blowing in from the sea through the pine trees on the cliff.
As the only sea I had seen up until then was in Incheon, the image of the sea etched in my mind was a dark brown color mixed with a tangy smell, and at times, a glittering blue when the sun hit the water. Maybe that was why early next morning, when I gazed out at the sea in all shades of blue, seen between a tall pine tree and the roof of Cheonhakjeong, the “Pavilion of a Thousand Cranes,” standing on a steep cliff, I was overwhelmed with emotion. It was nothing like the dull “blue” I had learned of in art class. I wondered about the color of the waters beyond the East Sea — the South Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic or the Mediterranean.
